Event Summary
Letter sent to Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the UK, referencing the problem of Obesity and the 12 step solution of OA:
17th May 2020 Dear Prime Minister, We read with interest the reports on Friday May 15th that you have decided it is time to tackle the obesity epidemic with greater vigour. To that end we wished to let you know about our group, the recently formed All Party Parliamentary Group on the 12 Step Recovery Programme for Addiction. One area of addiction that the 12 steps have been successfully applied to is food and eating disorders, particularly the problem of overeating and its resulting problem of obesity. There are over 200 obesity-related mutual aid 12 step recovery meetings throughout the UK every week. The support found in these groups has helped tens of thousands of men and women to find freedom from their problem of overeating. We hope that you will be interested enough to investigate these fellowships and would be pleased to arrange for you to meet with people who have successfully tackled their eating and obesity challenges using the 12 step programme. We believe that as a Conservative Prime Minister and world-famous libertarian, the 12 step programme, which emphasises compassion whilst promoting personal responsibility, is an ideal fit for your Government. We believe that the 12 step recovery approach can be helpful in informing your reported desire for a "more interventionist approach". Yours sincerely, Lord Brooke of Alverthorpe Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on 12 Step Recovery Dr Samantha Duggan Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group on 12 Step Recovery
